Synopsis:

Journalist, fighter, and feminist Gloria Steinem is an indelible icon known for her world-shaping activism, guidance of the revolutionary women’s movement, and writing that has impacted generations. In this nontraditional biopic, Julie Taymor crafts a complex tapestry of one of the most inspirational and legendary figures of modern history, based on Steinem’s own biographical book ‘My Life on the Road.’

THE GLORIAS (Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Lulu Wilson, Ryan Keira Armstrong) traces Steinem’s influential journey to prominence—from her time in India as a young woman, to the founding of Ms. magazine in New York, to her role in the rise of the women’s rights movement in the 1960s, to the historic 1977 National Women’s Conference and beyond.

The Glorias stars Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Lulu Wilson, Ryan Keira Armstrong, and Timothy Hutton.

Told in a non-linear fashion, we get to see Gloria in one of four periods of their life, portrayed by the four actresses listed above. As we watch her life unfold, we watch as “The Glorias” talk to one another, ruminating on what they have done, what they might do, and what they might have changed.

This technique is often used to great effect, but was, perhaps, used a bit too much, as it draws some of the narrative momentum away from what is otherwise and incredible story, as Gloria Steinem rises from frustrated writer to somewhat-unwilling spokesperson for the women’s equal rights movement.

Similar to our discussion of RBG, the great and interesting life of Gloria Steinem, though certainly more cinematic than RBG’s, is still not a great FILM, regardless of how impactful her life has been.
