Synopsis:

A stranger obsessed with the unsolved Redwood murders, convinces a group of bereaved family members to venture into the wilderness in hope of proving the existence of the infamous killer.

Their quest for truth sees a sinister turn of events, as the hunters become the hunted. A blood-soaked fight for survival ensues when they find that the tales told of the axe-wielding manic is very real.

The sequel to the 2014 original, The Redwood Massacre, features scream queen Danielle Harris.

Full disclosure: I haven’t watched the original, so let’s see if the sequel can stand on its own.

Well, they do a pretty good job of setting up the broad strokes of the original, I think: group of campers disappears, and the father of one of the campers has spent 10 years researching not just those in his daughter’s group, but dozens of others who’ve disappeared in the area, ostensibly killed by the same maniac, whom authorities don’t believe exists.

Offered the chance to solve the mystery once and for all by a stranger, Max (who has his own disturbing issues), he goes along, recruiting his traumatized younger daughter to return to the area in hopes of locating the killer and avenging their family.

I feel like we know waaayyyy too much about Max by the time they begin their trek into the forest…

As the group pushes further into the area they’ve never been allowed to search, they find an underground RAF base, and tensions begin to rise.

But who is the “Burlap Killer,” really?

In many ways, RM:A is a pretty boilerplate slasher flick, but the production value and performances are really good.

And, yes, it does manage to stand on its own, without the original.

We definitely recommend watching this one.
