Synopsis:

Based on a true story, this clever, intriguing, and hyperbolic comedy follows the main character – ‘the Narrator’ – who is befriended by his young new neighbor ‘the Kid,’ after he joins the local newspaper team.

Obsessed with the idea that the Kid may be a sociopath, the Narrator goes to extreme lengths to uncover the truth about him and his wife, a woman he ultimately begins to fancy. Between long walks down the street, a twisted dinner date, and a car drive gone terribly wrong, the Narrator gets closer and closer to the truth about the Kid. But the truth, as he finds, is anything but what he expected.

The premise behind The Mimic is intriguing, or at least it was intriguing enough for me to screen the film. It seemed just off-beat enough to fall into my admittedly not-quite-standard sense of humor, without jumping all the way in to bat-shit crazy.

As it turns out, I was correct. It managed to walk that fine line between funny and painful, for which I am thankful.

This is due to the fact that the film is essentially a two man play, dependent on the performances of the leads, Thomas Sadowski and Jake Robinson, to keep everything on a simultaneously even, yet twisted, keel.

Thankfully, they manage to play off one another nicely, owing to a script with briskly paced dialogue, which both actors handle with ease. The often rat-a-tat-tat back and forth is not an easy thing to do; something which old friends with a shared existential vocabulary often perform without thinking about, but which is difficult to simulate without genuine chemistry between the players.

Overall, if you’re in the mood for an interesting, and sometimes silly — but not too silly — excursion into the mind of a sociopath (or sociopaths…?), you will find The Mimic to be immensely enjoyable, and well worth your precious viewing hours.
