Synopsis:

In the late 90s, a video archivist unearths a series of sinister pirate broadcasts and becomes obsessed with uncovering the dark conspiracy behind them.

Not only is this film set in the 90’s, but it feels like it’s set in the 90s. I mean, aside from the marked lack of cell phones and the ongoing effort of our protagonist to transfer old TV broadcasts to–GASP!–DVD, there’s not a lot that just screams “90s!”…

…But it still feels like that’s where we are.

As our hero finds himself falling deeper and deeper into the rabbit-hole of these pirate broadcasts, merging it with his own past trauma, one is reminded of the ease with which a trip down the wikipedia urban-legend/conspiracy-theory path can start.

And it almost never ends well, does it?

This detective chase is very compelling overall, and, save for a bit of a muddy end sequence, I would have no problem recommending Broadcast Signal Intrusion to any fan of a good thriller/horror.

The design choices for the pirate broadcast sequences are truly creepy, and feel like they would be right at home in a more modern, “internet hacker” type of tale.

Note sure where BSI is going to end up being available, but I’ll likely watch it again, mostly to experience the creep factor of the pirate signals.
