In a quest to take control of her personal health, actor Selma Blair adapts to new ways of living while pursuing a risky medical procedure, after revealing her diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis in 2018.
What to say about the documentary Introducing, Selma Blair we caught during this year’s SXSW Film Festival?
Wow.
First, we love Selma Blair. Love, love, love her.
Second, how much courage did it take to not only not simply curl up and hide following her MS diagnosis, but to embrace it, to flaunt it, essentially, on social media, in order to forestall any attempts at exploitation by what is, by all counts in Hollywood, a very exploitive media apparatus?
All that is a very convoluted way of saying: Selma Blair said “F-you! It’s my life, and I’m going to be in charge of what I can be in charge of!”
And this is why we love her.
It is–at all times–a powerful, moving, and open look at a period in her life that is nothing short of life-changing… in Every. Single. Way.
And even when it pains her, physically and emotionally (and there may be more emotional pain than physical), she keeps on, letting us see what her life is like: the good and bad, highs and lows, advances and set-backs.
Have we mentioned we love her?
And it is clear that she is prouder of this work than any acting job she has had, as it’s impact on people–real people in real life–is incalculably greater.
The recently-launched Discovery+ streaming service has acquired Introducing, Selma Blair, and it will be available to watch later this year.
Watch it.
