Sasquatch
43 Minutes, Not Rated
Directed by Joshua Rofe
Synopsis:
Sasquatch is a true crime doc series following investigative journalist David Holthouse as he attempts to solve a bizarre twenty-five year old triple homicide that was said to be the work of a mythical creature.
So it begins: coverage of the dozen films we caught during this years’ virtual South By Southwest (SXSW). Let’s begin, shall we?
The approach this series takes to enter the Sasquatch legend is fairly unique: instead of trying to investigate SASQUATCH–this big, massively documented cryptid mythology–is a unique and novel approach:
Investigating a SPECIFIC INCIDENT RE: Bigfoot. A very different approach than the traditional ‘Squatch hunters.
This isn’t a blanket search for Sasquatch, but rather a coordinated, focused effort to confirm or deny what the reporter recalls as an authentic, contemporaneous experience by people not predisposed to create a story.
As is required in any effort to research any aspect of the Sasquatch story, we are gifted yet again with the most famous Sasquatch footage ever: the now-mythical Patterson-Gimlin film of the female ‘Squatch walking away down the creek-bed and turning back to look at them from 1967.
Nor would a background in Sasquatch be complete without a visit to Dr Jeff Meldrum of Idaho State University, whose extensive collection and study of footprint casts has made him the “go-to” guy for research of this most pervasive of Sasquatch “evidence” to determine whether it may or may not be genuine.
The fun really starts, though, when an independent third party recalls reports of the same incident without having knowledge of the reporter’s background or interest in the specifics of that event.
So, the first episode provides a very solid beginning to what could be a fascinating series.
Also, as a bonus, we get extensive historical perspective on the development of the California pot industry, lol.
Sasquatch can be seen on Hulu.
