The Madness Inside Me
89 Minutes, Not Rated
Written and Directed by Matthew Berkowitz
Synopsis:
Madison Taylor is a forensic psychiatrist, spending her days interviewing prison inmates and her evenings with her husband Jeremy. When Jeremy is killed in a home invasion by Francis Tate, her world begins to turn itself inside out. Madison’s fascination with morbid crime begins to gnaw away at her character.
She becomes sleepless and now spends her evenings stalking and photographing strangers. She refuses to identify her husband’s killer and instead chooses to stalk him for revenge.
Now finding pleasure in her thrill-seeking, dangerous life choices, she starts to put herself in compromising situations for arousal. Is her relationship with criminals an excuse for her to rebel or is this the person who has always been inside her?
Thoughts:
The Madness Inside Me is a slow burn of a film. With the exception of a flashback to a violent attack, there’s not a ton of action going on here to get in the way of experiencing our lead’s response to said violence.
But is it a response to that violence, at all, or simply a reaction? (Yes, I believe there’s a difference?)
That’s the question would have us answer for ourselves.
The performances here are all pretty good, even if the character motivations aren’t always clear or rational.
As we watch Madison flounder through life after the death of her husband, we assume a more nefarious purpose after she refuses to identify his killer.
So begins the experience of watching an otherwise well-adjusted person seemingly begin to fray at the edges, evolving into something else.
Once she confronts her husband’s killer directly, though, is when things start getting weird.
By the film reaches its climax, however, we are treated to not one, not two, but three separate twists in Madison’s sordid tale.
And that might be too many.
I don’t want to spoil anything for you, so I’m going to tell you to watch The Madness Inside Me; just consider yourself warned that you may find yourself saying “why?” on more than one occasion.
And by the end, you may ask yourself “what?”
And you probably won’t be too mad about either of those questions, which I will call a win.
