Synopsis:

U.S. soldier, Miles Willis, is shot and wounded during an intense firefight in Iraq. As he tries to radio for help, a sudden blinding light surrounds him, and he awakens to find himself trapped in a strange, colorless cube with nothing inside but his own combat gear. As time passes, the cube begins to change: fluctuating extreme temperatures, random shifts of gravity, and strange writing appearing on the walls. His only communication is with one person — a mystery woman who calls him on his satellite phone, claiming to be trapped in a similar space. As the clock ticks, the two of them must figure out who has them, why they were taken, and how to escape.

I like a good sci-fi movie. Heck, I LOVE a good “B” sci-fi movie.

The Abandon gives me just that.

Basically a one-man show, the majority of the film takes place in a single cube-shaped room with no apparent entrances or exits.

The mystery, of course, is not just “how did I get here?” but “how do I get OUT of here?”

I certainly don’t want to spoil too much of the film here, but I can say that I loved the actual premise of the film, and of the why things worked the way they worked. Right up my sci-fi alley.

But then the filmmakers become, perhaps, a bit too clever for their own good. they try to over-engineer the solutions, beyond what is necessary for the characters, the story, and the audience.

As I said, I like where their heads were at overall, and I liked the film, generally, but…

Listen to me prattle on for the rest of the review.

The Abandon premiered earlier this month at the Mammoth Film Festival in Mammoth, California.

The Abandon stars Jonathan Rosenthal and Tamara Perry.
