The Andy Baker Tape – Review
70 Minutes, Not Rated
Written by Dustin Fontaine and Bret Lada
Directed by Bret Lada
Synopsis:
In October of 2020 food blogger Jeff Blake and his half-brother Andy Baker hit the road on a food tour that had the potential to change their lives. They were never seen again.
This is their footage…
Are we done with the found footage conceit yet?
No?
Dang it.
This time, we’ve got Jeff Blake, food Vlogger and likely next Food Network host, trying to seal the deal while also dealing with a trip to meet a recently discovered half-brother following the death of his father.
Andy is a bit of an odd bird, as they say. Friendly, polite, but something is just… off… about him, which puts Jeff on edge, though he finally opens up enough to Andy to give him a ride to Baltimore for a job, which happens to be where Jeff is going to film his final test episode for the Food Network.
Unsurprisingly, not all is as it seems between Andy’s ears, and Jeff finds himself in more and more difficult situations as the trip progresses.
Ultimately, though, the film doesn’t make any sense. It’s format plays here like a bit of extended improv rather than a well-planned story, and while Bret Lada’s Andy is an effective wild card, the overall structure is the weak point.
And without a solid structure, there’s nothing to hang anything on.
I’d skip it.
The Andy Baker Tape is currently available on streaming platforms and stars Bret Lada and Dustin Fontaine.
