**NOTE: this post will be updated with audio once we actually have the chance to talk about it. Until then, enjoy this brief look at my thoughts. Stay tuned.**
Synopsis:
Based on Star Wars and characters created by George Lucas, the series is set during the prequel era and spotlights important moments in the lives of fan-favorite characters Ahsoka Tano and Jedi-turned-Sith Lord Count Dooku as they embark on respective paths toward heroism and villainy.
The title of this 6-episode series of Star Wars-based shorts is a bit of a head fake. Sure, all six center around THE Jedi, the overall effect feels a bit more like a gap-filling film that was cut up into more easily digestible chunks.
Beginning with an episode featuring a young Qui-Gon Jinn while he was still a padawan to Dooku (yes, THAT Dooku), and continuing on to an episode featuring Dooku tooling around the galaxy with Mace Windu, the series finally settles into the timeline established in the prequel trilogy, before finally settling into something reminiscent of the Clone Wars animated series, with an emphasis on Ahsoka Tano.
This is your reminder that Dave Filoni did a huge chunk of the writing on this series.
None of this is a bad thing, mind you; I simply thought the show was going to be a bit more random and diverse in its storytelling, perhaps with six separate and perhaps new, Jedi as they travel the galaxy keeping the peace and providing justice.
Heck, I just finished reading the first High Republic novel, Light of the Jedi, and while I could critique the writing style a bit, I found the overall concept and story to be entertaining enough. Perhaps Disney should consider a 10-episode animated series of 12–15-minute shorts devoted to that time period to flesh out the history of that galaxy far, far away.
I mean, if the book sales are lackluster (and everything I’ve heard about them is that they are), then perhaps an alternate venue for those story ideas might be a bit easier to present.
Also, by spreading out the central characters in that kind of series, viewership would tell you what works and what doesn’t, which could only help determine what’s more likely to succeed moving forward.
But I digress; we were talking about Tales of the Jedi. My previous points aside regarding my expectations, this is a solid Star Wars product, eminently enjoyable and well-constructed.
