Followers (Terror)

Synopsis:

What starts as hilariously bad YouTube videos develops into a warning to the world about a shocking new strain of supernatural serial killer.

Jonty, a failing influencer with an ambition to reach over a million followers, will stop at nothing to become famous. A new start at university brings with it hopes of a resurgence in his popularity when a demonic presence appears in his student house. Jonty decides to stream his and his housemates’ experiences with this supernatural entity to gain the fame and fortune he’s most been craving. But at what cost?

Another day, another found-footage supernatural thriller. This time, we’re couching it in a social media aspect, as disgraced influencer star Jonty goes to university and attempts to document his “normal” life, only to discover that he and his flat mates are living in a haunted house.

On its surface, Followers isn’t an especially bad movie, though it’s not particularly good, either. If you’re more into the TikTok, high-flash, overwrought emotion aspect of social media, then you might appreciate this one a bit more.

Whereas generally I find I can invest myself in some aspect of films of this genre, this one just didn’t grab me, for whatever reason. Again, it’s not objective bad in any particular way, so it’s not like I’m able to simply say “I didn’t like it,” because that’s not true.

Perhaps if we’d had more development of the actual supernatural aspect of it instead of the social media focus it would have been more compelling for me.

If you’re a fan of the genre, you may find something more relatable to it than I did, but if you’re not, I don’t think you’re going to find a compelling argument for becoming a fan, either.

Followers hits Digtial and On Demand March 24 and stars Rhys Yates, Nina Wadia, Orion Lee, Tanya Burr, Harry Jarvis, Loreece Harrison, and Erin Austen.

And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
