Synopsis:
A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers embark on an epic quest to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.
Look, you can — and should — listen to Ryan and I talk about this movie, but here’s the single most important thing I want to get across to you right now:
DO NOT LISTEN TO THE COUNTLESS IDIOTS ON THE INTERNET WHO ARE FINDING WAYS TO TELL YOU NOT TO WATCH THIS MOVIE.
Sure, that doesn’t mean that you’re going to LOVE Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, but I can tell you that in no way should you be disappointed in it if you even casually played the game.
The film has everything: drama, magic, comedy, dragons, an exceptional array of monsters and subtle (and not-so-subtle) callbacks to basically every Edition of D&D, but it also has the single most important thing a film adaptation of the game should have: Fun.
It’s a Fun movie.
If you’ve played, you know how quickly the tone of a session can swing from serious to silly, from dangerous to distracted…
This movie has that. It feels like a game, not a movie of the game.
Everyone on screen seems like they’re legitimately enjoying themselves doing it, whether they are chewing some dramatic line or snarking a sarcastic comment, it just feels Good.
Not Lawful-Good… more like Chaotic-Good.
I’ve been a D&D fan/player since the mid/late 80s and still own the materials to prove it. You can read about my sordid gaming history and why I think it’s important HERE, but the point is that I’m not just singing the praises of this movie for no reason; I’m singing them because it has earned them.
The actors — lead by Chris Pine –give fine performances of their characters, and overall the effects are better than some other effects-heavy efforts to hit theaters lately. The action is nicely paced, and who doesn’t love Hugh Grant being a complete dick?
Do not, for the love of God, let people tell you in advance that this movie “does something” they find distasteful for whatever reason. They’re wrong. They’re just wrong.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves sneaks into theaters on March 31 and stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Hugh Grant, Chloe Colemand, Daisy Head, and Rege-Jean Page
And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
