Synopsis:

Life is an adventure for space scavengers Kip Corman and his daughter Taylor as they navigate their ship through a universe filled with monsters, aliens, and robots in order to reach the mythical Deepstar and collect the riches within.

I love a B movie as much as anyone, so I guess from that standpoint, Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar is a perfectly adequate way to spend 90 minutes. It’s got a solid enough story to hang some fair to decent special effects on, and the interplay between some of the characters is actually better than I am used to from the sheer volume of films I watch.

Now, the special effects are at a level commensurate with what I’m sure the budget on this film was (read: LOW), but since I kind of give a crap about (some of) the characters, I’ve always been willing to overlook that.

A few of the story points are terribly predictable, but not in a way that derails any enjoyment of the film for what it is. I did enjoy the creature design near the end of the film, and the concept of what it does is kind of unique, so it’s nice when a smaller film can bring something new to the table.

So while I can’t give Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar a rave review, I can honestly tell you that I have seen far worse sci-fi films that clearly have a larger budget, proving once again that money does not guarantee a successful film (looking at you, Disney/Marvel/Lucasfilm).

Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar is in theaters now, hits digital on May 2, and stars Michael Pare, Sarah French, Olivier Gruner, Tyler Gallant, Sadie Katz, Rachele Brooke Smith, Anahit Setian, and Elise Muller.

And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
