Synopsis:
A novelist whose long standing marriage is suddenly upended when she overhears her husband give his honest reaction to her latest book. A film about trust, lies, and the things we say to the people we love most.
As a “creative” myself, the subject matter here hits a bit close to home, lol. Spouses are supposed to be honest, but still supportive and protective, as well.
When those goals conflict, what happens?
In You Hurt My Feelings, we get this exact scenario played out in multiple relationships, and it’s as awkward as you might think for a married couple to have trust shaken in this way.
The problem is that You Hurt My Feelings is… boring. We’ve seen these kinds of relationships before, and while the cast does an admirable job with the material, it simply fails to ignite on screen.
That doesn’t make it a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it doesn’t make it anything other than an okay movie.
I have long argued that streaming isn’t — and can’t — replace the theatrical experience, and I firmly believe that, but I also believe that there is a place for streaming, and some films might be better suited for a streaming release than a theatrical one.
You Hurt My Feelings is one of those kinds of movies. It’s a smaller budget, character driven, competently acted film that isn’t going to make a ton of money in theaters but would add decent content to a streaming service to maintain subscriber interest.
I know, we don’t’ talk much about that kind of thing here usually, but this is the distribution world we live in now.
And it’s an A24 film, so you know pretty much it’s going to be a well put together piece of cinema, don’t you?
So, if you’re a fan of Julia Louis-Dreyfus and are looking for something a bit less bombastic and blockbuster, You Hurt My Feelings is a solid, if not necessarily groundbreaking, option.
You Hurt My Feelings arrives in theaters on may 26 and stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tobias Menzies, Michaela Watkins, Arian Moayed, Owen Teague, and Jeannie Berlin.
And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
