First Contact (Uncork’d)

Synopsis:

FIRST CONTACT tells of two estranged adult siblings, Casey and Dan, who travel to their late scientist father’s farmhouse to make sense of his incomplete work. They soon learn that their father’s work was far more dangerous than they could ever imagine: An evil entity, buried in time and space for millions of years, has been released and has begun wreaking havoc on the locals. One by one the bodies start to pile up. Now, Dan and Casey must figure out the secrets of this extra – dimensional monster before it’s too late.

It’s no secret that I love science fiction, even (especially?) B-movie sci fi. Even more, I like sci fi that tries to do something different, something more than “look, alien! Ahhh!”

First Contact is one of those.

More the story of two siblings who come home after their scientist father disappears and is presumed dead than a “hard” science fiction film, they discover that he was working on something that might explain not only his vanishing act, but mankind’s place in the universe.

Piecing together his research, they learn that forces are afoot from dimensions apart from our own, using human hosts to move about in search of their father, who they believe can save them.

First Contact is smarter than it probably has a right to be, which is nice. It reaches at every opportunity to be more than it might otherwise, and if it falls down, it is saved by the good and sincere performances of our leads, who play well together as estranged but loving siblings.

The ending is a bit esoteric, and I won’t spoil it for you, but again, when a small-budget film takes big ideas and tries to make them real, I’ll give quite a bit of slack for it.

Check out First Contact if you’re in the mood for some sci fi that’s definitely not all gee-whiz boom-boom.

First Contact is now available on Digital and DVD and stars Anna Shields, James Liddell, Chris Cimperman, Caitlin Duffy, and Paul Kandarian.

And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
