Synopsis:
When a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, they become hooked on the new thrill, until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces.
Much has been said about the differences between Asian horror and Western horror. They’re two distinct flavors. You know what other horror is different?
Australian/New Zealand horror.
Talk to Me takes what is essentially the classic Ouija Board trope of contacting the dead and “letting something through” and ramps it up to Eleven.
Take the embalmed, disembodied hand of a powerful medium and you can contact the dead.
ou can even channel them so they can speak through and control your body.
Sounds terrifying, and it is. Everyone in the movie agrees, but it also feels good, so they keep doing it and doing it, and eventually…
…bad things happen.
Doesn’t sound too different from Western horror, right? Well, wrong. Whereas in films like the Insidious series we are treated to a dark, quiet, forlorn place where the dead reside, rarely intruded upon by the living.
Rarely, lol.
In Talk to Me, however, this placid, damned near serene landscape is anything but. And the horror that occurs on this side of the veil is downright disturbing and gruesome.
And it’s sure to appeal to any hardcore horror fan.
The cast is solid, with an appearance by an always fantastic Miranda Otto as a mother who simply wants her child back.
Not for the squeamish, but definitely a great horror flick if that’s your thing.
Talk to Me hits theaters this Friday and stars Sophie Wilde, Joe Bird, Alexandra Jensen, and Miranda Otto.
And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
