Hundreds of Beavers – Review

In the Utah Film Critics Association, there is one particular member who I never would have guessed would enjoy this film. I had seen this one come through my email, but hadn’t requested a screener until that critic nearly demanded people see it if they could.

**NOTE: You can read Mark’s quick thoughts on the film below, then use the links to watch or listen as Ryan joins him to opine on it in more depth (along with the Australian horror film Sting and the divisive Sundance film, Sasquatch Sunset). Remember, though, you can listen to all our discussions of this and every other movie directly over on ACAST. Stay tuned.**

Hundreds of Beavers (Gravitas)

108 Minutes, Not Rated
Written by Mike Cheslik, Ryland Brickson Cole Tews
Directed by Mike Cheslik

Synopsis:

In this 19th century, supernatural winter epic, a drunken applejack salesman must go from zero to hero and become North America’s greatest fur trapper by defeating hundreds of beavers.

That got my attention.

Once I watched it, I absolutely understand why he was so adamant about it. If you’re of a certain age, I think, you will absolutely enjoy this one: part video game, part Python, part early YouTube, part Dad joke, wrapped up in a battle of wills between a failed purveyor of applejack (a type of apple-based alcohol) and the beavers his new vocation of trapper demand he collect in order to obtain the things he needs to continue his work (and obtain something even more precious).

Look, this one is truly difficult to categorize (or explain) because it is absolutely unlike anything you’ve seen before…

…but I absolutely love it. It feels like it should be seen in a 100-seat theater at midnight with like-minded people.

It’s awesome.

Hundreds of Beavers is now streaming on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video and stars Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, Olivia Graves, Wes Tank, Doug Mancheski, and Luis Rico.

And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
