Falling Stars

Review by Mark Woodring

Imagine an alternate world where witches are real, and the first night of harvest requires traditional rituals to be performed to protect you from the witches in the sky.

**NOTE: this post may be updated with audio once we actually have the chance to talk about it. Until then, you can read Mark’s review below. Remember, though, you can listen to all our discussions of this and every other movie directly over on ACAST. Stay tuned.**

Synopsis:

For three brothers in the American Southwest, this year’s event will be different. When they discover their friend has killed and buried a witch, they venture out into the desert to witness it for themselves. Whilst encountering the scene, they accidentally desecrate the body, setting in motion a sequence of perilous events.

The only way they can put a stop to the curse set upon their family is to burn the corpse before sunrise.

Falling Stars is one of those “unicorn” movies that film buffs should get excited about seeing; it’s got an interesting hook, good performances, and a compelling story, despite — or perhaps because of — it’s limited budget.

What a world Falling Stars creates for us to explore. A world where witches are real, everyone knows they’re real, and societal behaviors have been built up around that knowledge. Not belief: knowledge.

Sure, early on in the movie, it seems like all the discussion about witches is backwoods (or desert) superstition, but as the film evolves, we get more and more evidence that all this talk isn’t just BS, but real.

The film eventually confirms the knowledge that this is all real, but it doesn’t slow anything down at all. Instead, it picks up the pace and the tension for both the cast and the audience.

Will they reach the witch’s body in time to burn it before the curse run its course? Who knows?

But the absolute best part of this one is following our characters to find out.

Like I said: a “unicorn.”

And it’s a film I can say something about I rarely get the chance to anymore: Falling Stars is an absolute “must-watch.”

Falling Stars lands on VOD and in US cinemas on October 11 and stars Rene Leech, Shaun Duke Jr., Andrew Gabriel, Diane Worman, and Greg Poppa.

And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
