The Order

Review by Mark Woodring

Based on true events. You know how we feel about those movies around here, right?

This one, though, with Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult?

Okay, then.**NOTE: this post may be updated with audio once we actually have the chance to talk about it. Until then, you can read Mark’s review below. Remember, though, you can listen to all our discussions of this and every other movie directly over on ACAST. Stay tuned.**

The Order - Review
The Order (Vertical)

105 Minutes, Rated R
Written by Zach Baylin, Gary Gerhardt, Kevin Flynn
Directed by Justin Kurzel

Synopsis:

A series of bank robberies and car heists frightened communities in the Pacific Northwest. A lone FBI agent believes that the crimes were not the work of financially motivated criminals, but rather a group of dangerous domestic terrorists.

The presence of militias and various hate groups is nothing new. The Pacific Northwest states, including Idaho, Montana, and easter Oregon/Washington are hotbeds due to the ease of finding an isolated location to build out your compound and train for the inevitable collapse of society (under its own weight or with a push from one of the aforementioned groups).

The Order is a great film dramatizing one FBI agents belief in a movement that was growing beyond what law enforcement traditionally thought they would, and his battle to get ahead of them before it’s too late.

Jude Law as the world-weary FBI agent, Terry Husk, who is re-establishing the FBI office in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, carries his role of incredibly well. Balancing the stagnant nature of his current position with the flicker of duty that remains in him, he is convinced by a local deputy, ably played by Tye Sheridan, that something big is coming.

And that something is an offshoot of the biggest White Supremacist group in the area, and is led by Nicholas Hoult as Bob Matthews. A charismatic speaker and zealot, Bob Matthews has been organizing a series of thefts designed to purchase what he needs for his followers to engage in widespread domestic terrorism.

And he’s close when Terry Husk gets involved.

The issues surrounding those who fall victim to men like Matthews and his mentor (who can no longer control his pupil), Richard Butler, are still present, or at least still emphasized and exploited for the personal gain and/or aggrandizement of those who know how to reach it.

As the cat-and-mouse game between Husk and Matthews reaches its crescendo, both Law and Hoult absolutely step up and drive each other higher, until the inevitable happens.

The Order is a film that should not be missed, whether you’re simply a fan of the cast or the genre. It really is a well put together bit of cinema, the kind of which we need more of to balance out the $200-300M special-effects-laden blockbusters.

The Order hits theaters Friday, December 3, and stars Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Marc Maron, and Jurnee Smollett.

And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
