Love Hurts

Review by Mark Woodring

Following up his monster comeback, Ke Huy Quan takes a slightly different role than the one that won him an Oscar (Everything Everywhere All At Once), instead opting for a more overtly romantic comedy-type film.

Love Hurts - Review
Love Hurts (Universal)

83 Minutes, Rated R

Written by Matthew Murray, Josh Stoddard, Luke Passmore
Directed by Jonathan Eusebio

Synopsis:

A realtor is pulled back into the life he left behind after his former partner-in-crime resurfaces with an ominous message. With his crime-lord brother also on his trail, he must confront his past and the history he never fully buried.

Don’t let the negative headlines put you off; Love Hurts is actually a lot of fun. I simply think too many people want it to be something that it simply isn’t, nor is it trying to be that way.

This is a silly, fun take on something akin to The Long Kiss Goodnight or John Wick.

I think the big problem is that people want it to be those films instead of what it is: a chance for the folks making it to have a little fun.

Is Love Hurts perfect? Nope. The (unrequited) romance is undercooked, but that is somewhat asuaged by watching Marshawn “BeastMode” Lynch give relationship advice, while Ke’s assistant, Ashley, finds herself in a burgeoning relationship with a poetically-inclined hitman (Shakir).

The script is well below the level of talent it has brining it to life, but that’s okay; it’s all in good fun. The fight scenes are well choreographed, the music rocks, and Ke perfectly embodies his conflicted character as he vacillates between the love for his new life and the love of his old one.

Love Hurts is, according to my wife, “absolutely a date movie,” and as a responsible husband, I have to agree with her.

Luckily, I do, in fact, agree with her. Love Hurts is a brisk bit of fun that ultimately means nothing, but which can make you smile a bit as you remember that there are movies that aren’t 3+ hours long which can still give you something.

Even if that something is just a smile.

Love Hurts is in theaters NOW and stars ke Huy Quan, Ariana DeBose, Mustafa Shakir, Lio Tipton, Danial Wu, Can Gigandet, Marshawn Lynch, Andre Eriksen, Rhys Darby, and Sean Astin.

And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
