Clone Cops

Review by Mark Woodring

What starts as a fairly typical heist-gone-wrong movie quickly spirals into a manic examination of future tech and entertainment.

And if that isn’t enough for you, it’s also flat-out silly.

**NOTE: this post may be updated with audio once we actually have the chance to talk about it. Until then, you can read Mark’s review below. Remember, though, you can listen to all our discussions of this and every other movie directly over on ACAST. Stay tuned.**

Clone Cops - Review
Clone Cops (Freestyle)

96 Minutes, Not Rated
Written by Phillip Cordell, Danny Dones
Directed by Danny Dones

Synopsis:

A gang of outlaws defend their hideout until they discover a shocking secret about who they are and what they’re up against. Now it’s a race against time as they look for a way to escape certain doom at the hands of the Clone Cops.

Look, no one is going to be comparing Clone Cops to Heat, Ocean’s 11/12/13, or The Italian Job anytime soon, because frankly, they’re not what this movie is supposed to be emulating.

Instead, think Top Secret!, Free Fire, or even Hot Shots!

Heck, I won’t even argue that there’s a bit of The Running Man in here.

What I really enjoyed about Clone Cops is the fact that it commits completely to two things: the premise that entertainment can find anything to profitize, including crime and death (see the aforementioned The Running Man), and the idea that comedy came come from playing things straight.

We get the added commentary on how entertainment becomes more about those who present the material instead of the supposed subjects of the show. When the hosts are bigger than the contestants, if you will.

And that’s the biggest joy of watching Clone Cops: no matter how insane the situation, the actors basically play everything straight, with the comedy coming from that disconnect between the silliness of the situation and the integrity with which the actors present their characters.

It just doesn’t get any better than that, in terms of comedy.

Now, is Clone Cops for everyone? Nope. I can think of at least one person in my house who would hate me if I made them watch it. But for those of a certain temperament, who enjoyed at least some of the films referenced above, you might find yourself giggling maniacally at this one, too.

Clone Cops is now available on most VOD platforms (including Apple TV, Prime Video, and Fandango at Home) and stars Laura Holloway, Quinnlan Ashe, Ted Welch, Allison Shrum, Schyler Tillett, Tamiko Robinson Steele, Dean Shortland, Ravi Patel, Walter J. Buck, Henry Haggard, Phillip Cordell, Justin Tarrents, and Victoria Keum Jee.

And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
