Zootopia 2
Review by Mark Woodring
It was 9 years ago, in 2016, that we first entered the crazy animal world of Zootopia. It was a pleasant trip, with Ginnifer Goodwin at the height of her Once Upon a Time stardom, introducing us to Meter Maid Judy Hopps, who desperately wanted to be more.
Jason Bateman’s sly fox, Nick Wilde, was suitably shifty yet lovable, and all was right in the animated world.
Now, can the sequel possibly live up to the (somewhat delayed) expectations?
**NOTE: this post may be updated with audio once we actually have the chance to talk about it. Until then, you can read Mark’s review below. Remember, you can listen to all our discussions of this and every other movie directly over on ACAST. Stay tuned.**

Synopsis:
Rookie cops Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde find themselves on the twisting trail of a great mystery when Gary De’Snake arrives in Zootopia and turns the animal metropolis upside down. To crack the case, Judy and Nick must go undercover to unexpected new parts of town, where their growing partnership is tested like never before.
First off, let’s get the big thing out of the way: kids will love it. Funny animals?
Nailed it.
Cool? Let’s move on.
The music in Zootopia 2 is great, bringing an energy to the scenes as Judy and Nick careen from one investigatory disaster to another.
And speaking of Judy and Nick, once foes, now partners, these two embody the buddy cop trope of dysfunctional partners, starting the film in actual couples’ (partners’) therapy, a recurring theme throughout the film.
The film has a similar plot point to The Bad Guys 2, in which our heroes find themselves no longer on the right side of the law and on the run, still trying to solve the mystery, but that’s okay, because the characters make it all worthwhile.
The movie unfolds in a running gag of gags, unabashedly moving without stopping for a breath between various puns and Easter Eggs from and about various dad-type jokes and pop-culture references.
Zootopia 2 is an entertaining romp, one which should be pleasing enough to engage everyone without becoming annoying to anyone during the inevitable home streaming replays by enthusiastic younguns.
Check it out this holiday weekend as a choice the whole family can agree on.
Zootopia 2 is in theaters now and features the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Ke Huy Quan, Fortune Feimster, Andy Samberg, Idris Elba, Patrick Warburton, Quinta Brunson, Nate Torrence, and Shakira.
And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
