Frost - Review
Frost (Cleopatra Ent)

Synopsis:

A young woman and her estranged father fight to survive after being stranded on a remote mountainside during a winter storm.

What starts as a simple survival drama ultimately evolves into something else…something darker.

Something truly horrific.

But we’ll get there.

First, know that one of the hardest things to do for an actor is act when they’re alone. There’s nobody to react to.

Shit, ask Tom Hanks how easy it is to act when there’s nobody there… except a volleyball.

But I digress.

In Frost, Devanny Pinn gets to shoulder that burden for over an hour. Trapped in the crashed car as her father tries to find help in the face of a raging winter storm, Pinn must present the pain and fear of the situation, mostly without dialogue.

The only talking she does is to her unborn baby, who decides–spoiler alert–to arrive early because of the accident.

And, generally, Pinn is able to pull this difficult feat off.

Whether it’s scaring off a wolf looking for an easy snack or trying to stay warm in an electric car with broken windows, the situation is dire, but Pinn effectively does what needs to be done.

Oh, and there’s no food or drink. Good times. (Well, there’s a pack of nightcrawlers for fishing…)

Desperately hoping her father can bring help, the film situation slowly devolves–thanks to injury and hypothermia–from simple survival to a horrific ending, one that may, actually, cause some people to say “nope. I’m out.”

Following that event, the actual ending is a bit melodramatic, and the story would have been better served–and made even more horrific, if that’s possible–by allowing Pinn to see the aftermath of it all.

But that’s just me. I’ve got a dark streak.

So, check out Frost if you’re interested in some minimalist filmmaking, but be prepared for some stomach churning toward the end.

You have been warned.

Frost is available digitally and on Blu-ray October 11 and stars Devanny Pinn and Vernon Wells.
