Reign of Chaos – Movie Review

Synopsis:
When the world is gripped by a plague unleashed by the evil lord Chaos, and humans are turned into rabid creatures, mankind can only be saved by three young women, descendants of a Goddess, with the power to stop Chaos’ evil.
Left Films is a relatively new company to me. I don’t recall seeing their name out in front of many movies I’ve screened until the last week or so, when I’ve hit a few.
This admittedly limited sample size makes it difficult to judge, but the last one they sent me was pretty good, so there’s that.
This one, though…
Wow. A pretty decent premise is effectively hamstrung from the outset by far too many problems.
What kind of problems? Let’s start with:
– the cinematography: Shot in weird close-ups and quick-cuts, the opening sequence is a terrible mash-up of… things happening… that are just terribly assembled.
– the fight choreography: The combat leads can’t fight. They simply cannot fight in a convincing manner. The various punches and kicks are horribly executed and presented for mythical/mystical warriors who are supposed to save the world. Maybe that’s why the editing of those scenes is so patchy…
– the characters: Three “sisters” with special powers? Charmed. A gruff foreigner who is going to train them? Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
– That same trainer? Literally a pale copy of Sean Connery’s Ramirez from Highlander, including his name.
– Training montage? Stolen from every 80s action movie ever… and not convincing at all. But they managed to cram in the “chicks fighting chicks” schtick from every 80s movie during it.
As I said, the general story is promising enough, but it just wasn’t developed enough before someone yelled “Action!” It’s hard to criticize the cast when they’ve been given so little to work with…
But you have to. They’re not that good, either. I don’t know if anyone could have saved this production, but they certainly did it no favors.
All in all, Reign of Chaos is another 77 minutes I wish I could get back.
But I can’t.
Don’t make the same mistake I did. Skip it.
