Synopsis:

A 1950s housewife living with her husband in a utopian experimental community begins to worry that his glamorous company could be hiding disturbing secrets.

I’m not sure which is more dramatic, the happenings on-screen or behind the scenes of this movie.

The behind-the-scenes drama of Don’t Worry Darling has been well-documented, from the was-he or wasn’t-he fired story of Shia LaBeouf to the interpersonal extracurriculars between director Olivia Wilde and her male lead, Styles.

The on-screen drama concerns the wives of the “Victory project,” living in their perfect little town in the middle of the desert, but who slowly start to suspect something is amiss.

Endless comparisons to The Stepford Wives have been made, and not without some merit, but I’m not sure this film is as clever as that one. There are aspects of both The Matrix and The Village at play in Don’t Worry Darling that are more apt comparisons to make, I believe.

Olivia Wilde builds us an interesting world here, but it’s almost as if she was so determined to make the world immersive, we wind up with little actually happening.

That’s not to say the performances are bad. Florence Pugh is fantastic, though Styles struggles to keep his accent from veering wildly across the spectrum, and Chris PIne plays his charismatic rogue with both enthusiasm and restraint.

In the end, though, it’s the lack of real context that disappoints, the lack of a real sense of what exists outside of Victory and how the residents truly came to be part of such an undertaking.

Don’t Worry Darling is currently playing in theaters and stars Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, OLivia Wilde, Gemma Chan, KiKi Layne, Nick Kroll, Douglas SMith, and Sydney Chandler.
