Synopsis:

A divorced couple teams up and travels to Bali to stop their daughter from making the same mistake they think they made 25 years ago.

It should be no surprise to anyone by now that romantic comedies aren’t really my bag. Sure, they’re generally more appealing to me than a musical might be, but that’s not really saying a lot, either.

So here we have Hollywood’s certifiable, golden, bullet-proof co-stars: George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

Going into this one, I previous stated that I hoped this movie, unlike so many other rom coms, might end with these two still hating one another, breaking free of the formula while still addressing the quandary about their daughter’s impending nuptials.

No such luck, unfortunately. I suppose it really can’t be a romantic comedy unless the targets wind up together, can it?

Luckily (for me, at least), like all romantic comedies, Ticket to Paradise‘s rise or fall is entirely in the hands of its stars, and Clooney/Roberts does not disappoint. Like the two old friends they are, they banter and bicker with impeccable timing and flair, elevating the material above its common roots.

For me, at least.

**Note: stay during the credits for some out-takes that really drive their relationship home.**

Here, as Georgia and David Cotton, they agree to sublimate their natural antipathy for one another to try to keep their daughter from getting married.

Kaitlyn Dever plays their daughter, and she has now given me two really enjoyable performances in the last month (the other being Rosaline on Netflix). She really shines here as the no-longer-conflicted-about-her-life twenty-something, Lily.

And don’t get me started on her best friend, Wren, played by Billie Lourd, who, just as she did in Booksmart (also with Dever), manages to steal every single scene she’s in, even if she’s not talking.

The cast makes this one work for me, so it may very well work for you, if you’re on the fence about rom coms.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Ticket to Paradise hits theaters tomorrow, October 21, and stars Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Kaitlyn Dever, Maxime Bouttier, Billie Lourd, and Lucas Bravo.
