Synopsis:

Two lifelong friends find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them.

Man!

People have been decrying the lack of quality, mid-budget movies for what feels like forever, and now that we get one, I hope it doesn’t get lost in the crush of big budget blockbusters.
This film made the festival circuit this year to great fanfare and acclaim, and it’s easy to see why.

This one is simply fantastic.

Take the incredibly simple premise of one friend simply cutting ties with their longtime friend, inject some incredibly dark humor, mix it with incredibly good performances, and you’ve got The Banshees of Inisherin.

I don’t want to spoil anything for you, because this is absolutely a case where you really do want to watch this story unfold in front of you, with two actors who have been friends for a long time (at least as far back as In Bruges) digging deep into the material and providing the audience with…this.

Colin Ferrell is good here, and I may have mentioned in another review that I have been finding his performances as he’s gotten older to be better and more enjoyable for me. This is, by far, my favorite performance of his to date.

And as good as that is–and it IS–, it simply pales in comparison to Brendan Gleeson’s. This man puts on a masterclass, speaking probably 20% of the words Farrell does, but expressing so much while saying nothing at all. A simple glance or nod of the head speaks volumes. And every single (non) word of it was profound.

It was a complete joy to watch him.

I would be remiss if I forgot that we also get Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan in supporting roles, and so the film just gets that much better.

Watch for this film to be bandied about a lot for various awards, and rightfully so.

If you’re a fan of Farrell and/or Gleeson, and aren’t afraid of some authentic Irish accents, then definitely seek this one out wherever you are and see it.

You’ll thank me for it.

The Banshees of Inisherin hits theaters on November 4 and stars Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, and Kerry Condon.
