Firenado – Review

Synopsis:
Four scientists uncover a ground-breaking technology capable of controlling weather. On the first use of the device, it malfunctions and creates a Fire Tornado. As the Firenado leaves a wake of destruction, the group assist in evacuating nearby residents but stumble upon into an organized crime home invasion. Stuck between a rock and a hard place; the group struggle to survive the two threats.
From the folks about to unleash Pooh: Blood & Honey onto the world comes the sci-fi environmental romp Firenado.

Sure, we’re using the old science-fiction chestnut of being able to control the weather, which somewhat limits where we can go, but still.
It’s a tornado, and it’s on fire.
And that isn’t good for anybody involved.
I must say, though, that since the film is apparently filmed in Scotland (?), the visuals are gorgeous, thought the initial presence of a tornado for the scientists to mess with is jarring, even for a movie like this.
The tornado effects are basic, as is the crew’s understanding of spatial relationships in terms of proximity to an EF-5 tornado.
The poor development of the romance between the beautiful grad student (Sian Altman) and the criminal accountant (Daniel Godfrey), not to mention his southern (US) accent, leaves much to be desired, as do the remaining moving parts here: the rival gang out for $$, the power-mad scientist…
The performances are generally fine, given the material; over-the-top when needed, restrained when not, but the film is far too short at 78 minutes to actually attempt to fill in the shortcomings noted above.
In the end, Firenado is nothing more than what you might expect from the title, and if that’s enough for you, good on you.
But I want more from my science-gone-mad environmental disaster movie, lol.
I am looking forward to Pooh: Blood & Honey, though.

And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
