Birth/Rebirth - Review
Birth/Rebirth (Sundance)

Synopsis:

A morgue technician successfully reanimates the body of a little girl, but to keep her breathing, she will need to harvest biological materials from pregnant women. When the girl’s mother, a nurse, discovers her baby alive, they enter into a deal that forces them both down a dark path of no return.

Wow. This movie is a complete mind-fuck.

And I mean that in the best possible way.

I know; I’m not normally quite that blunt, but here me out.

Two women, both medical professionals, are joined in a scenario straight out of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, but with the added twist of being a mother’s worst nightmare.

Nightmares?

Both of our leads (Marin Ireland and Judy Reyes) are fantastic, one in a completely motherly way, the other in a way…not necessarily motherly…perhaps more daughterly, lol (?).

What would you do to save the life of someone you love? What would you do to save the life of your family? Whose family would you sacrifice to do so?

How far would you go?

Writer/director Laura Moss invokes the very best horror trope here: well-intentioned science gone too far.

And it completely kicks cinematic butt. Yes, some poor decisions are made, but really, aren’t they always?

Birth/Rebirth premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival in the Midnight category.

Birth/Rebirth stars Judy Reyes, Marin Ireland, AJ Lister, LaChanze, and Breeda Wool.
