Polite Society – Review

Synopsis:
Ria Khan believes that she must save her older sister Lena from her impending marriage. After enlisting her friends’ help, she attempts to pull off the most ambitious of all wedding heists, in the name of independence and sisterhood.
This one was on my Sundance list, but I unfortunately couldn’t make it, so I’m glad to see it in theaters so quickly.
Watching the trailer (I know…) I got a vibe similar to Scott Pilgrim vs The World, and while that winds up being kind of accurate, it’s not complete; there’s also a bit of the feel we got in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, minus the Zombies.
A younger sister’s fantastic take on the life of herself and her sister, not bound by the traditions of their Pakistani family, Polite Society disproves those who think movies with female leads can’t succeed, cross-cultural films can’t appeal to wider audiences, and frankly, that the British can’t make comedy.
Polite society washes all those preconceptions down the drain.
Not that I had any of those, and if you do, shame on you.
And watch this film.
The character chemistry is great, the performances are superb, the Bollywood feel of parts of it lends some color and pizzaz, and at its heart, it’s a story about family sticking together and supporting each other.
No. Matter. What.
Especially no matter what your prospective in-laws may or may not be planning for you…
A easy recommendation for anyone looking for someone just off the beaten path, but not so far off that you can’t find your way.
Polite Society hits theaters this Friday (April 28) and stars Priya Kansara, Ritu Arya, Renu Brindle, Nimra Bucha, Rekha John-Cheriyan, Seraphina Beh, Ella Bruccoleri, Sally Ann, and Shona Babayemi.
And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
