Easter Bloody Easter – Review

There simply aren’t enough horror movies — even comedic ones — based around Easter.

And that’s a crime.

**NOTE: this post may be updated with audio once we actually have the chance to talk about it. Until then, you can read Mark’s review below. Remember, though, you can listen to all our discussions of this and every other movie directly over on ACAST. Stay tuned.**

Easter Bloody Easter (Gravitas)

103 Minutes, Not Rated (?)
Written by Allison Lobel
Directed by Diane Foster

Synopsis:

Set in Walburg, a small Texas town, a series of violent bloody murders has the locals on edge and scared for the upcoming “Easter-palooza.” The mayor refuses to cancel the festivities and argues that the famous “Egg Hunt” only happens once a year. Jeanie, our heroine, wakes to find her husband missing and his wrecked car covered in blood and fur. Sam, the town’s resident conspiracy theorist, steers Jeanie and her best friend Carol to the legend of the killer Jackalope that ravaged their town 150 years ago.

Easter Bloody Easter is an easy movie to categorize, and I don’t mean that in terms of its genre.

This film is meant to do one thing: make you smile.

And it does that in spades.

Sure, you could look at the sheer ridiculousness of it all, from the idea of the evil Jackalope to the countless demon-rabbit puppets lurking around every corner, waiting to kill the denizens of Walburg, and simply dismiss the film out of hand.

But you’d be wrong to do it.

Instead, stop to think how much fun the cast and crew had filming this bit of holiday horror fluff. How much actual work was put in to designing the mythology (such as it is… I mean, come on, now) and planning the various deaths and, more importantly, the music.

Music is huge here, with (by the filmmakers’ own count) 75 pieces of original music and 10 full songs, and the soundtrack is being released on Spotify and on vinyl (which warms my LP-owning heart).

The cast is completely immersed in their over-the-top portrayals of American life as presumed by much of the world, with accents, costumes, and behaviors that are both overdone and somehow still accurate (especially if, like me, you’ve ever actually lived in Texas).

If you enjoyed The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Repo: The Genetic Opera, and other films containing such unbridled exuberance, you’ll probably enjoy laughing your way through Easter Bloody Easter.

Fun is the name of the game here, and if that’s not your thing, well then, I don’t know what to tell you.

Easter Bloody Easter is now available on VOD and streaming platforms and stars Diane Foster, Kelly Grant, Allison Lobel, Zuri Starks, D’Andre Noiré, Zachary Kanner, Miles Cooper and Gavin Lee.

And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
