Good Boy
Review by Mark Woodring
In the horror genre, it’s tough to get a new way of presenting some of the standard ideas normally presented in these films. Skinamarink is a recent example of finding a way in, even if I didn’t really care for it, at least it was unique in its presentation.
Good Boy, on the other hand…

Synopsis:
A loyal dog moves to a rural family home with his owner, only to discover supernatural forces lurking in the shadows. As dark entities threaten his human companion, the brave pup must fight to protect the one he loves most.
Good Boy is just one of those films that manages to take what seems to be a preposterous idea – in this case, the DOG is the audience’s point of view – and make it work in such a way that the audience never questions it.
It’s rare that any project can tweak a formula and make it seem effortless, but the addition of a DOG as the main character adds a degree of difficulty that most filmmakers couldn’t even imagine working around.
And make no mistake, this is the DOG’s movie. Indy is a wonderfully adorable and surprisingly emotive animal whose peril we dread.
The plot is pretty standard, but there’s nothing wrong with that so long as it is executed well, and Good Boy absolutely is. It knows what it is, it gets in, tells its story, and gets out.
No muss, no fuss.
A perfect film in that regard.
Definitely check out Good Boy wherever you can, but theatrical support for films like this one are important so we don’t get robbed of the next inventive bit of cinema because the box office wasn’t there.
Good Boy is currently in theaters and will hit Shudder sometime soon. It stars Indy (the dog), Shane Jensen, and Arielle Friedman.
And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
