The Sheep Detectives

Review by Mark Woodring

I saw the trailer for The Sheep Detectives a couple months ago on a lovely date night with my wife.

I couldn’t believe it when I leaned over and told her “I don’t know why, but I want to see that.”

The Sheep Detectives - Review
The Sheep Detectives (Amazon MGM)

109 Minutes, Rated PG
Written by Craig Mazin, Leonie Swann
Directed by Kyle Balda

Synopsis:

Every night a shepherd reads aloud a murder mystery, pretending his sheep can understand. When he is found dead, the sheep realize at once that it was a murder and think they know everything about how to go about solving it.

I thought that this silly-looking talking animal movie might be something. I don’t know why, but it just hit me right.

Imagine my absolute delight when it was, actually, something.

Look, whodunnits are making a comeback, and they’re one of my current favorite genres when done correctly, so I’m predisposed to thinking this one might be entertaining.

The voice-work is great, with a cast perfectly suited to their respective sheep. The dynamics between the sheep are wonderfully defined and executed, and the baby sheep are cute enough to entertain the kids in the audience without annoying mom and dad.

The script is put together very well, with all the requisite pieces of the whodunnit in place, and to make sure no one gets lost, the sheep kindly teach us everything George taught them through his nightly reading of murder mysteries.

A very fun little diversion of a film in a marquee full of action and science fiction, The Sheep Detectives is sure to charm everybody.

A very BIG recommendation from me. Check it out.

The Sheep Detectives is in theaters now and stars Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Brett Goldstein, Patrick Stewart, Regina Hall, Bella Ramsey, Chris O’Dowd, Rhys Darby, Bryan Cranston, Tosin Cole, Conleth Hill, Hong Chau, Nicholas Braun, Molly Gordon, and Nicholas Galitzine.

And remember, if the BEST thing you can say about a movie is that it’s “visually stunning,” then they’ve done something wrong.
