Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass (Review)

Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass

Review by Ryan Michael Painter

I don’t typically think of myself as a fan of sex comedies. I did, however, find The Invite to be thought provoking with a few laughs scattered in between blushes. So, how do I feel about Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, a sex comedy with a decidedly lower brow?

Synopsis:

Small town hairdresser Gail Daughtry is engaged to her devoted high school sweetheart, Tom. Her life takes a turn when a trip to a book signing leads to Tom meeting – and sleeping – with his “celebrity pass”. Reeling from the betrayal, Gail impulsively joins her friend Otto on a trip to Los Angeles, where a psychic convinces Gail that the only way to save her marriage is to “even the scales” with her own celebrity pass: Jon Hamm. Thus begins an epic journey through Tinseltown as Gail and Otto join forces with a talent agency assistant, a paparazzo, and actor John Slattery, all in the search for Hamm. Along the way, they collide with celebrities and are hunted by a group of Italian assassins as they get ever closer to finding the elusive star.

Where The Invite leans into character building, one location, and a limited cast, Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is far less intimate, features a much larger cast and travels cross country for its protagonist to have her shot at revenge (and Jon Hamm).

Gail Daughtry, having caught her fiancée having sex with his celebrity sex pass candidate Jennifer Aniston, sets out to finds Jon Hamm in hopes of restoring the blissful life she had prior to her fiancée’s not-quite-sanctioned fling.

Chaos, with a hefty dose of vulgarity, follows.

Gail is incredibly naïve. That might be her only attribute that really matters. Zoey Deutch, who I often like, spends most of the film smiling in an absentminded sort of way. Adorable, yes. But not someone I want to spend 93 minutes with. Particularly when that 93 minutes feels closer to two hours.

I don’t have to look at reviews to know that I’m probably in the minority here. Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass checks off so many contemporary comedy boxes that it’s not hard to imagine most audiences, or at least those who know what they are walking into, finding this silly romp to be incredibly entertaining.

It’s just not for me.

Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass stars Zoey Deutch, Jon Hamm, John Slattery, Ken Marino, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Ben Wang, Joe Lo Truglio, and Sabrina Impacciatore and is in theaters July 10, 2026.
